Former South African Politician Mangosuthu Buthelezi Dies at 95: Controversial Figure’s Legacy Explored

Former South African politician Mangosuthu Buthelezi has died at the age of 95. This was announced on Saturday by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Buthelezi served twice as Home Affairs Minister, under ANC presidents Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki. He was also leader of the Zulus, South Africa’s largest ethnic group.

The former minister was controversial. During the struggle against Apartheid, Buthelezi was a bitter rival of Mandela’s ANC. That accused him of colluding with the white oppressors. After the ANC came to power in 1994, relations between that party and Buthelezi’s Inkatha Freedom Party improved.

In the preceding decades, armed conflicts often occurred between both parties. Up to 20,000 people are said to have died.
