Former soccer player Lou Macari installs dormitory booths for the homeless

A Scottish football legend has come to the rescue of those who due to the pandemic have nowhere to sleep. Lou Macari, a former Manchester United and Celtic player, has installed these individual sleeping cabins or capsules after the British Government banned shared bedrooms due to COVID-19.

This type of accommodation is frequently used at music festivals for a high price.

Euronews: People spend thousands of euros to spend the night in these cabins, don’t they?

Lou Macari: Yes, the truth is that I saw them installed for the first time in a field and I thought ‘that looks good, will it work? And I said to myself ‘well, let’s try it’, I tried it and it does work.

This warehouse in the city of Stoke-on-Trent now houses 40 homeless people, after several shelters were closed last year for failing to comply with necessary sanitary measures.

Macari: I had to move quickly, I found this place and decided that we should settle here. So even during the last horrible 12 months it wasn’t too bad for us here. “

In addition to keeping the coronavirus at bay with aid to the public, the Lou Macari Foundation has provided, in some cases, for the first time, these people their own personal space.

Macari: Each cabin has its number on the front door, they are equipped with a television and everything you need to be comfortable in these times of adversity. The response has been wonderful.

For Thomas Preston it has been a blessing. It stayed warm during the recent cold snap that hit much of Europe.

“These booths are amazing, Lou Macari has done a great job, what a great man. I know it doesn’t seem like much but after closing the door you breathe peace,” Preston said.

From leading a local soccer team, after his retirement as a player, to offering a helping hand to those who do not own a home. Each cabin is a vital place that some are fortunate to call home during the pandemic.
