Former Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld dies at age 88 Abroad

Rumsfeld also served as Secretary of Defense under President Gerald Ford from 1975 to 1977, making him both the youngest and oldest Secretary of Defense in the United States. Under Bush, he was instrumental in the post-9/11 invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Rumsfeld died surrounded by his family in Taos, New Mexico. He led the Pentagon when the US military invaded Iraq and Afghanistan. He is seen as the architect of the American raids that took place after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

Rumsfeld left his post in late 2006, but it took years after that for the US role in Iraq to end. The US military withdrew from that country only in 2011. The Americans are still in Afghanistan, but will soon complete their retreat. The Republican made no apologies for his role in the two wars that lasted longer than originally intended.
