Alex Salmond, former First Minister of Scotland and leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), has died aged 69.
Salmond reportedly died during a meal at a hotel in Ohrid, North Macedonia. His death was due to an obstruction.
Yesterday, Salmond was one of the speakers at a forum on cultural diplomacy, co-organized by the office of the former president of North Macedonia, Gjorge Ivanov, the International Center “Alliance of Civilizations” and the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy from Berlin.
He was Prime Minister (First Minister) of Scotland from 2007 to 2014, fell ill while in North Macedonia.
He had led his party to power in 2007 SNP and was re-elected in 2011 with an unprecedented majority which paved the way for the referendum.
Salmond led the ‘Yes’ campaign for Scottish independence in the 2014 referendum. He resigned when Scots chose to remain in the UK by 55% to 45%.
He clashed with his successor as prime minister, Nicola Sturgeon, over her government’s poor handling of harassment allegations made against him. He was acquitted of sex offense charges in 2020.
In 2018 he left the SNP and founded the pro-independence Alba party.
