Former Russian president suddenly visits China to meet with Xi Jinping

Former president Russia Dmitry Medvedev made an unannounced visit to Beijing, Chinathis week, and met with the President Xi Jinping. Medvedev has also held talks with Xi discussing a range of issues, including the conflict Ukraine.

As reported ReutersOn Wednesday (12/21/2022), Medvedev, who served as president of Russia in 2008-2012, is now a deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, which is chaired by the president Vladimir Putin.

He posted a video via his Telegram channel showing the moment he met Xi. Both are seen smiling in the photo. There was even a moment when the ranks of Russian and Chinese officials met.

Medvedev said he and Xi discussed the issue of an “unlimited” strategic partnership between Russia and China. According to Medvedev, he and Xi also discussed the issue of the Ukrainian conflict, but he did not elaborate on what they discussed.

“We discussed cooperation between the two ruling parties in China and Russia… bilateral cooperation in our strategic partnership, including in the fields of economy and industrial production. We also discussed international issues, including, of course, the conflict in Ukraine,” Medvedev explained in his statement.

“The talks have been fruitful,” he added.

Russia accelerated its pivot to China after being bombarded by Western sanctions to punish its invasion of Ukraine, launched in late February. Moscow said it had called the invasion a “special military operation” intended to denazify and demilitarize Ukraine.
