Former Russian deputy prime minister speaks out: ‘War worst in life’

Former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich has criticized the war in Ukraine. Dvorkovich, who served under President Putin and then Prime Minister Medvedev until four years ago, is one of very few former top politicians to have done so.

In an interview with the American news magazine Mother Jones Dvorkovich says that war is one of the worst things that can happen to you in life. “Any war, anywhere. This war too,” he is quoted as saying. He goes on to say, “Wars don’t just kill priceless lives. They kill hopes and aspirations, and freeze or destroy relationships and bonds.”

Dvorkovich worked in the Kremlin for ten years. He was personal adviser to President Dmitry Medvedev from 2008 to 2012. When Putin took over the presidency in 2012 and Medvedev became prime minister, Dvorkovich was promoted to deputy prime minister. He remained so until 2018. The Russian was also involved in organizing the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and ran the Russian railways for a few years.
