Former Russian Consulate General in Ruse, Bulgaria Found Damaged: Architect Discovers Significant Vandalism Upon Inspection

An inspection of the building of the former Russian Consulate General in the Bulgarian city of Ruse, from where the Russians left in June 2022, found that the building had suffered significant damage – door frames were knocked out, taps, sinks and kitchen equipment were stolen.

As “European Truth” writes, about this to the Bulgarian public radio BNR said the author of the building project, architect Ventsislav Ilyev.

The building in Ruse, which housed the diplomatic mission of first the Soviet Union and then Russia in Ruse, is privately owned by the municipality. Since 1985, rent for it has gone to the city budget. After the expulsion of Russian diplomatic workers from Bulgaria in the summer of 2022, they left the consulate building in Ruse.

“Yesterday I decided to go and see what was going on. I was surprised to see that the door frames were missing and I thought that the municipality had removed them. On the second floor where the apartments are located, everything had been removed. The taps on the sinks were missing in some places “, said architect Iliev.

“To make it clearer, let me summarize – when leaving Ruse, diplomats tore out the doors of rooms with drawers, radiators of sinks, beds, furniture, kitchen equipment – everything that few people thought of taking back home,” he summed up.

Ruse City Council Deputy Deyan Gerasimov, after the discovery of damage to the building of the former Russian Consulate General, called for the creation of a commission to study “all contracts that were concluded for the rental of this property.”

“I would advise the Russian Federation to take the monument to the Soviet Army, which stands next door, and take it home as well,” the portal quotes him “24 hours”.

The Russian Embassy in Bulgaria on the evening of January 19 decided to comment on the published facts about the damage to the building. They stated that they left in July 2022 without “any comments.”

“We don’t know what happened in the building over the past year and a half; it was beyond our control. The relevant Bulgarian services are responsible for the condition of the building, and questions about this should be addressed to them,” the Russians said in a commentary quoted by the portal Novini.bg.

Last month Bulgarian National Radio stopped broadcasting the interview with the Russian Ambassador to Bulgaria Eleonora Mitrofanova.
