‘All these years I have managed to keep the cancer in my bladder at bay through outpatient tricks here and a chemo flush there. But last year that tumor started pushing its way out with a force worthy of a better cause,” Joost writes.
He undergoes operations and PET scans, ‘always followed by bad and even worse news conversations’. His doctor refers him to the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital, where options are possible, ‘one of which sounded even more serious to me than the other’. “Fortunately, there was also a porridge and wet variant on offer,” he says about the treatment he receives.
Joost has promised his two ‘dear daughters, who support me with advice and assistance, to approach the AVL with an open mind’. “So I won’t get ahead of myself,” he concludes. ‘It gives me strength to move forward courageously. You haven’t gotten rid of me yet.’
In 2020 Joost lost his wife Emma. She dies after a short illness. In 2021, Joost confirms that he has found love with former newsreader Noraly Beyer.
