It probably won’t work out between Wilfred Genee and Dennis Schouten. Schouten left in January as a reporter for the radio program Veronica Inside, which is presented by Genee, and since then he has been at loggerheads with his former teacher. In an episode of his YouTube show GossipTalk Schouten opens a frontal attack on the TV presenter this week.
Schouten is angry with Genee, because last week it was announced in radio program Veronica Inside that Schouten is one of the participants of Expedition Robinson 2021. Niels van Baarlen, Genee’s sidekick, revealed that news. Schouten now has to fear a fine of 15,000 euros, because he has leaked information about his participation. “I received calls from furious people. Because at Wilfred’s radio show it was said that I am going to Expedition Robinson,” says Schouten in GossipTalk. “I’m very angry about that.”
The former PowNed journalist decided to call Genee himself, but couldn’t get him on the line. “I then pissed him off about everything I could think of about the app,” he admits. Schouten says Genee knew that RTL can fine Schouten for leaking his own participation. “It is just an underhanded prank. In the end I was called by his sidekick Niels van Baarlen, because Wilfred did not dare to call himself. I said: ‘If you are his carrier pigeon, you can pass on that I am completely done with him’.”
Schouten worked at Veronica Inside between November 2020 and January 2021. The 25-year-old reporter was Genee’s protégé. However, Talpa’s television and radio director, Paul Römer, made him stop his YouTube show if he wanted to continue his career at Talpa. Schouten did not agree to this and therefore said goodbye to the radio program. Genee has repeatedly indicated that he finds Schouten a great talent and that he recognizes things in his own style, but their friendship seems irreparably damaged.
In ‘Head Pieces’ Wilfred Genee told extensively about the long series of conflicts he had with well-known colleagues in the field, but he also said that things usually work out well.
On the broadcast of GossipTalk Schouten reads an app that he sent to Genee, after his participation in Expedition Robinson was made public. “Wilfred, I’m done with it. You just want to score at my expense. We had a great time, but I’m just done with it now,” wrote Schouten. He then reads out the answer he got from the presenter. “Hi Dennis, if that’s what you actually think of me, we won’t drink any more drinks in the future.” Genee is said to have further written in the message that he has ‘always defended Schouten with fire and sword’, but that the point has come to say goodbye.
“I haven’t told anyone your story,” Schouten quotes. He reacts surprised in the broadcast and says he does not know what Genee is referring to: “What is my story then?” Schouten continues: “As I have never done in the past about other things that you have told me in confidence. I was surprised by Niels’ story. The strength, but also the danger of the program. Only then did we chose to announce a few more names, in order to spread the attention.” That explanation cannot count on sympathy from Schouten: “So I was brought in first, to then bring some names to spread the attention?”
Genee continues in his message: “I now read that you have people around you who know exactly who I am. That I would have screwed you. I can’t even blame them. They don’t know me. You do. And that’s why I find your reaction completely incomprehensible. I stuck my neck out for you for five years because I had a soft spot for you, think you are talented and recognized something of myself in you. That recognition has disappeared with this one. I wish you all the best.”
