Former Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun and former Prime Minister Kim Boo-gyeom met on the morning of the 24th and shared concerns about the recent situation of the Democratic Party of Korea. The Democratic Party has recently been showing signs of severe division as former leader Lee Nak-yeon prepares to found a new party.

Former Prime Minister Chung and former Prime Minister Kim had breakfast together this morning. Former Prime Minister Chung and former Prime Minister Kim met again three weeks after meeting earlier this month. In particular, it is said that on this day, there was talk of creating a meeting with former CEO Nak-yeon Lee. If successful, the ‘three prime ministers of the Moon Jae-in administration’ will gather in one place. Although the three prime ministers have each met ‘one-on-one’, they have never gathered in one place. A party official said, “They are seniors and adults of the Democratic Party, and there is even symbolism as they are the three prime ministers of the Moon Jae-in administration.” He added, “The gathering of the three together has great political significance in itself.”

However, there is no specific date on when and in what format the three prime ministers will meet. Inside the party, it was said, “Former Prime Minister Chung and Representative Lee Jae-myung decided to meet on the 28th, so even if the three of them meet, it will be after that.”

Former Prime Minister Chung and former Prime Minister Kim have shown a negative stance toward the new party promoted by former leader Lee. Personnel from both sides said, “There is no change in our position that the creation of a new party is not possible.” This means that even if the three prime ministers gather, it is not a meeting to form a new party.

However, a party official who knows both sides well said, “The two former prime ministers are negative toward the new party, but they sympathize with former leader Lee’s awareness of the problem.” Former leader Lee has been demanding Lee Jae-myung’s resignation, saying that his “judicial risk” is suffocating the party and that the “dogs” who are hard-core supporters are suppressing democracy within the party. This means that there is no significant difference in the positions of the three former prime ministers on issues within the party, even if it does not lead to the creation of a new party.

The two former prime ministers are said to have expressed concern and displeasure at the harsh criticism within the party toward former leader Lee Nak-yeon at the meeting. Recently, the Democratic Party has continued to criticize former leader Lee, who mentions the creation of a new party. Representative Kim Min-seok attacked former representative Lee with the expression “Sakura New Party, Sakura Rebellion.” Former Prime Minister Chung and former Prime Minister Kim are said to have criticized this, saying, “They fail to show even the minimum courtesy to a party elder and senior politician.”

Former Prime Minister Chung and former Prime Minister Kim also expressed deep concern about the ‘nomination conflict’ that recently broke out within the party. In the recent Democratic Party candidate verification process, former Siheung Mayor Kim Yun-sik was judged ‘unqualified’, leading to criticism of the “screaming nomination massacre.” This is because the incumbent member of the local council for whom former Mayor Kim is planning to run is Jo Jeong-sik, secretary-general of the pro-Myung faction, who currently holds the real power in the nomination process. Former Prime Minister Chung and former Prime Minister Kim are said to have emphasized the fair role of the party leadership in preventing such conflicts, saying, “Division in nominations directly leads to division in the party.”
