Former Prime Minister Guinea-Bissau wins presidential election NOW

Former Prime Minister Umaro Cissoko Embalo was named the winner of the presidential election on Wednesday, taking on his rival and former Prime Minister Domingos Simoes Pereira in the second round of voting.

According to the national election committee, Embalo received 54 percent of the votes and Pereira 46 percent. Pereira, however, believes that election fraud has been committed and wants to challenge the result in court.

One of Embalo’s election promises is to resolve the internal tensions in the country. Since 1974 there have been nine coups or coup attempts in the West African country. Seated president Jose Mario Vaz is the first president who was not deposed or killed during his tenure. However, corruption and political disputes also played a role during his term of office.

Embalo also promises to modernize the country. Guinea-Bissau is one of the poorest countries in the world and has 1.6 million inhabitants.
