Former President Trump starts his own social media platform | Abroad

Trump has been mulling over plans for his own platform for some time. He states that with Truth Social he can fight “the tyranny of big tech.” He himself was banned from Twitter and Facebook at the beginning of this year after the storming of the Capitol. He later unsuccessfully asked a judge to reverse it. “We live in a world where the Taliban has a strong presence on Twitter, but your favorite US president has been silenced. That is unacceptable,” he said in the press release.

Twitter-cloon

Truth Social seems to be becoming a Twitter clone of sorts. A video on Trump’s media company website shows how the layout and functions are broadly the same. Trump himself will also be active on the platform. “I’m looking forward to sending my first ‘Truth’ on Truth social,” he says. Since his Twitter ban, he has stuck to emailed press releases that he sent almost as often as tweets.

Several alternatives to Twitter have been launched in recent years, specifically for conservative Americans who were unhappy with Twitter. But none of those services, like Gab, Parler, and Gettr, really broke through. Those services preyed on Trump in vain. Trump now hopes that his loyal supporters will make the switch to Truth with him.

‘Not woke’ programs

Trump also wants to start his own streaming service. Paid subscribers get access to ‘non woke’ programmes, news and podcasts. This service will be called TMTG+. Trump recruited producer Scott St. John to lead the service. St. John previously produced well-known reality shows such as “Deal or No Deal” and “America’s Got Talent.”

The big Fox News, with which Trump has had a love-hate relationship since the last election, will watch with interest how many subscribers Trump manages to attract. Fox also has several exclusive channels for subscribers. Right-wing pro-Trump channels OAN and Newsmax will look at Trump’s new service with dismay. They managed to attract the hard core of Trump supporters after Trump’s continued criticism of Fox after the election. But for these channels, Trump is now becoming a competitor.

The money for Trump’s plans is arranged with a complicated construction. The Trump Media & Technology Group merges with Digital World Acquisition Corporation. That company is a so-called Spac. That is a kind of listed bag of money created especially for the merger. The company is already listed on the Nasdaq. Behind the merger partner are a few large hedge funds.

Presidential Campaign

Immediately after Trump’s announcement, speculation began again about how the launch of this media company will affect Trump’s presidential ambitions. In recent months, there have been more rumors that Trump might be interested in another presidential campaign. Trump’s advisers want him to wait until after next year’s congressional elections to make an announcement.
