Maine Secretary of State Bellows said that former President Trump is not eligible to participate in the party’s primary election for next year’s presidential election in the state.
Bellows said that Trump was involved in the riots at the Capitol the year before last. According to the provisions of the Constitution, federal, state and local officials who have sworn to uphold the Constitution are not allowed to engage in public office if they intervene in riots or rebellions. He ruled that Trump is not eligible to participate in Maine next year. The qualification for the Republican primary is the second state after Colorado to exclude Trump from the general election primary.
A spokesman for the Trump campaign accused Bellows of trying to steal the election and disenfranchise voters, and said Trump would appeal.
