The first memorial speech was made by Kim Jong-in, advisor to the Roh Tae-woo Center and former emergency committee chairman of the United Future Party (formerly the People Power Party). He said, “Demands that had been suppressed for about 20 years (before democratization) were erupted all at once, but the deceased acknowledged the changes of the times and solved the problem through dialogue and compromise.” The second memorial speech was given by Kim Ki-hyun, leader of the People Power Party. He said, “His flexible politics is a great example in today’s era of conflict and polarization.”

Chinese Ambassador Xing Haiming and Hungarian Ambassador Sarderhai Stephen also attended the memorial service on this day. It is meant to commemorate the deceased’s achievements in ‘Northern diplomacy’. Ambassador Stephen, who gave his third memorial speech, said, “The deceased established diplomatic relations with over 40 countries through northern diplomacy, and Hungary was the first country to establish diplomatic relations.” He added, “In 1989, he came to the Hungarian National Assembly and said, ‘The establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries signaled the end of the Cold War system. “I gave a speech saying, ‘I sent a message of reconciliation and hope to the whole world,’” he said. At last year’s memorial service, Chinese Ambassador Xing Haiming gave a eulogy.

Accordionist Alexander Shaikin also played accompaniment to the recording of ‘Besame Mucho’ sung by former President Roh. Besame Mucho is the deceased’s favorite song.
