Former President Petro Poroshenko was again not released from Ukraine. Last time he had to ask Zelensky to leave – Meduza

The State Border Service of Ukraine refused to release Verkhovna Rada deputy and former President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko from the country. Poroshenko announced this on Facebook.

“Again the theater of the absurd on the border. I had a business trip signed by the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, but the border guards did not let me through. I am far from the opinion that the border guards acted on their own initiative. Everyone can guess for themselves who canceled the document signed by the speaker of parliament,” the fifth president of Ukraine wrote on Facebook.

According to Poroshenko, he planned to hold dozens of meetings in Poland and the United States, including with representatives of the US Congress and the Polish Sejm. In particular, he intended to discuss with the Polish authorities the issue of lifting the blockade of Ukrainian carriers on the border, and with the American authorities – the extension of military assistance to Ukraine.

Poroshenko statedthat he had an order from the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, “where it was clearly stated that I was on an international business trip from December 1 to 8.”

Representative of the Ukrainian Border Service Andrey Demchenko stated “Ukrainian Pravda” that Poroshenko was denied leave because “the border guards have confirmation that his business trip abroad has been cancelled.”

First Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Alexander Kornienko confirmedthat he canceled Poroshenko’s foreign business trip after receiving a letter marked “For official use,” the contents of which he cannot disclose.

“He [Порошенко] indicated as the main reason – participation in a non-parliamentary event, a party forum of the International Democratic Union. He wrote that in parallel with this there will be some other high-level meetings. According to our internal principles, participation in party events is allowed, but when we received a letter from the Democratic Party, which I cannot comment on, we were forced to cancel this business trip,” the deputy said on air at the national telethon.

Soon after the full-scale invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine, border guards also did not allow Petro Poroshenko to leave the border. In May 2022, Poroshenko was able to leave Ukraine only on the third attempt – and only after he published an open letter to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. He back to Ukraine in early June.

Over the past few years, more than 100 criminal cases have appeared in Ukraine, which are in one way or another directed against the fifth President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko. In particular, he is accused of high treason due to the supply of coal from the self-proclaimed DPR and LPR in 2014-2015. In this case, Poroshenko was chosen as a preventive measure in the form of a personal undertaking (similar to a written undertaking not to leave the place in Russia), but, as Poroshenko’s lawyer Ilya Novikov told Meduza, the underwriting period had expired.

Male Ukrainian citizens between 18 and 60 years of age are prohibited from leaving Ukraine. The restriction has been in effect since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine. Poroshenko is 58 years old.
