Former President of Costa Rica Charged with Corruption Allegations

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta –Costa Rica has charged former President Luis Guillermo Solis with charges corruption. The country’s former leader was accused of complicity in the improper transfer of government funds in 2017 to the state-owned Bancredito.

Costa Rica’s attorney general in a statement quoted Reuters on Thursday, July 6, 2023, said Solis’ delivery suggested the bank “appears to have sufficient liquidity” in the interest of the government’s image.

Solis ruled between 2014 and 2018. He denies the accusations.

“We have always acted according to the law, seeking the benefits of the state, as well as the protection of Bancredito’s creditors and the rights of its workers,” the center-left former president said in a video posted on Twitter.

If convicted, Solis could face up to eight years in prison, the attorney general’s office said.

Charges over the matter have also been brought against Helios Fallas, the former finance minister. Another name that has been dragged along is Sergio Alfaro, a former minister for the presidency, as well as two senior finance ministry officials.

Alfaro denied the allegations. “I know I didn’t commit any crime,” he said in a text message to Reuters. Fallas declined to comment directly on the allegations.

“This is a trial case,” he wrote in a text message, saying he would not comment further.
