Former Georgian President and opposition politician Mikheil Saakashvili has been arrested after returning to his homeland. This was announced today by the Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili, on the eve of the local elections, which may be very important for the political situation in the country, world agencies reported, BTA reported.
Earlier in the week, Saakashvili, who lived in Ukraine, announced his intention to return to his homeland for the local elections, despite the threat of imprisonment. He said he would do so to help “save the country”, and called for post-election street protests.
The politician, who led the Rose Revolution in Georgia in 2003, considers the allegations of abuse of power and concealment of crime to be politically motivated.
