Former President Donald Trump Called to Appear in Federal Court for Indictment in Connection to Congressional Events and Jan 6th Capitol Attack

The US Department of Justice said that former President Donald Trump is called to appear in federal court in Washington, DC, on August 3.

US media said that the federal grand jury handed over an indictment to a federal court in Washington regarding Trump’s role in congressional events.

Trump has also been charged with attempting to undermine the transfer of power in the lead-up to the January 6, 2021 riots.

In the 45-page court document, prosecutors allege a coordinated conspiracy across multiple US states in which Trump and his allies made fraudulent claims they knew were untrue in a desperate attempt to undermine American democracy and cling to power.

And after a fiery speech by Trump, his supporters attacked the Capitol building that houses Congress on January 6, 2021 in an attempt to prevent Congress from confirming Joe Biden’s victory.

The announcement by the US Department of Justice was preceded by a statement from Trump on Tuesday, in which he said he expected Federal Attorney General Jack Smith to charge him soon with a new criminal charge.

In a post on his “Truth Social” platform, Trump said: “I heard that deranged Jack Smith, in order to interfere in the 2024 presidential election, will make a new false accusation against your favorite president, me, at 17:00 (21:00 GMT).”

What are the charges against Trump?

• Following an investigation supervised by Special Prosecutor Jake Smith, the Republican primary candidate was charged with “conspiring against the American state”, obstructing an official procedure, and violating electoral rights.

• The indictment stated that “the accused, despite his defeat, was determined to remain in power. Therefore, for more than two months after the elections of November 3, 2020, the accused spread lies about the existence of fraud that changed the outcome and that he actually won.”

• The indictment added, “These allegations were false, and the accused knew they were false. However, the accused repeated and published them widely despite everything.”

• Smith has previously accused Trump of mishandling classified government documents.

• Two weeks ago, Trump said that he had received a letter from prosecutors in which they indicated that he would likely be charged with a criminal offense in connection with the storming of Congressional headquarters by his supporters on January 6, 2021.

• Trump asked Tuesday, “Why didn’t they do that two and a half years ago? Why did they wait so long?”

• Trump added, “Because they wanted it to happen in the middle of my campaign,” denouncing the “misconduct of the prosecution.”

• The accusations came at a time when Trump is campaigning to return to his previous position during the elections scheduled for next year.

• Trump leads the race for the Republican nomination to run in the elections.
