The Department of Justice (DOJ, for its acronym in English) formally accused Donald Trump, former president of the United States, of trying to delete videos from the security cameras of his private residence in Florida, Mar-a-Lago., adding to the number of charges Trump faces in his mishandling of classified documents case. This was reported by the news portal The Hill.
The Justice Department stated that Trump acted as an alleged co-conspirator to try to delete audiovisual material from security cameras, and received a new charge under the Espionage Act.
Thus, The accusation against the former Republican president will lead him to face 42 charges for the mishandling of classified documents. Prior to this indictment, Trump was facing 37 charges.
According to The Hill, Trump was charged with attempting to delete footage from security cameras in conjunction with Carlos de Oliveira, maintenance manager at Mar-a-Lagoand Walt Nauta, a Trump aide, who was also accused of mishandling classified documents.
The indictment said Oliveira allegedly told another Mar-a-Lago employee that “the ‘boss’ wanted the servers wiped down.”
For this, Oliveira must appear in court in Miami next Monday. The Mar-a-Lago maintenance manager was also accused of lying to investigators about his role in moving boxes of documents on the property, saying he “didn’t see anything.”
Trump is now charged with 42 federal charges, including unlawful withholding of government secrets, obstruction of justice and conspiracy.
