Former Premier League star advises Cristiano Ronaldo to retire | Football

Does Ronaldo really take this advice to heart?

Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo (39) scored his 900th career goal a few days ago and, despite his advanced age, is not currently thinking about retiring.

But that is exactly what former Liverpool star Mark Lawrenson (67) is advising him to do!

The former international player (39 caps for Ireland) told the gambling portal “Paddy Power”: “Cristiano Ronaldo is still scoring goals in Saudi Arabia – but should he sign a new contract there? I’m not sure.”

Ronaldo is in the final stages of his career and has been winding it down in the desert for some time. In January 2023, the Portuguese moved to Al-Nassr (Saudi Arabia) on a free transfer after a dispute with former club Manchester United. Since his arrival, the international has scored 62 goals in 68 matches and still regularly shows his class.

Nevertheless, Lawrenson is suggesting that he retire in 2025. “I think he needs a best friend who will tell him: ‘You’ve had an incredible career – just hang up your boots at the end of this season and let people remember you for what you’ve done.'”

The Irishman, who played 347 games for Liverpool FC, fears that Ronaldo will not be able to maintain his scoring rate for much longer.

Ronaldo certainly “doesn’t want to go through a season where he’s scored six goals or something like that halfway through in the Saudi league,” Lawrenson said.

The fact is: CR7 is still scoring regularly. In the current season, he has scored four goals in four games for Al-Nassr and provided two assists. In addition, he scored two goals against Scotland and Croatia in the Nations League for Portugal. When he scored his 900th goal in the 2-1 Nations League victory against Croatia a few days ago, he sank to the ground with tears in his eyes.

It will probably be some time before Ronaldo hangs up his football boots – or will it?
