An Iraqi court issued a death sentence against a former policeman for convicting him of the assassination of researcher Hisham al-Hashemi in July 2020 near his home in Baghdad, according to an official statement, on Sunday, in a case that sparked condemnation in Iraq and abroad.
A statement issued by the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council stated that “the Rusafa Criminal Court issued its death sentence against Ahmed Hamdawi Awaid for the murder of security expert Hisham al-Hashemi.”
The convict can appeal this ruling, as confirmed to AFP by a judicial source who preferred not to reveal his identity.
