New York former policeman Eric Adams, who had fought against racial discrimination in the police and will become the second African American, won the mayor’s election on Tuesday ASV in the post of mayor of the largest cities.

Adams will take up the post of mayor in January, replacing politician Bill de Blazio, whose second and final term will end on 31 December. They are both from the Democratic Party.
“Tonight, I have fulfilled my dream and am about to remove with all my heart the barriers that prevent you from filling yours,” said Adams, a 61-year-old Central Democrat, addressing the cheerful supporters at his victory party in Brooklyn.
Adams’ rival in the election was volunteer fighter Curtis Sliva of the Republican Party, but he had little chance of winning in New York City, where the number of registered Democrats is seven times the number of registered Republicans.
U.S. TV channels, including NBC and CBS, predicted Adams’ victory shortly after polls closed.
Early unofficial results, published by the New York City Electoral Council, showed Adams won more than 70% of the vote. Sliva, 67, quickly admitted her defeat.
Adams, as mayor of a city of more than eight million people, will oversee the largest municipal budget in the United States, the largest police force and the largest public school system.
In the Democratic pre-election in June, central Adams defeated progressive contenders, promising to fight the violent crime that has risen during the Covid-19 pandemic. He also promised to reduce wealth inequalities and reform the education system.
Adams will also have to deal with the lack of cheap housing, the impact of extreme weather on New York’s infrastructure and the violence in the infamous Rickers Island Prison.
He will try to reform the police, while keeping to his side the New York police force, which feels underestimated during de Blazio’s rule.
Adams is opposed to depriving the police of his money and has not called for an increase in taxes for the wealthy, so he has disagreed with left-wing Americans.
Born in 1960, Adams grew up in a family of butchers and caretakers in Queens. When he was arrested and beaten by two New York police officers at the age of 15, Adams pledged to become a police officer and reform the New York police from within.
He joined the New York Police Department in the mid-1980s, worked there for 22 years and was promoted to captain.
In 2006, Adams resigned from the police and was elected to the New York State Senate. He was a state senator until 2013, when he was elected president of the Brooklyn District.
Adams will become the 110th mayor of New York. The first African-American mayor of New York was David Dinking from 1990 to 1993.
