The Angels. Mexican Julio Urías, former pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, has been charged with five counts stemming from his arrest in September, on suspicion of violent conduct with his partner, authorities reported on Tuesday.
The hearing is scheduled for next May 2 where the accusations will be formally notified to the 27-year-old pitcher, who is accused, according to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office, of charges of domestic violence, illegal retention of a person , beatings and aggression towards his partner.
The Major League Baseball office suspended Urías indefinitely after his arrest in front of BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, where he was attending an MLS soccer game. Police were initially alerted by a citizen who reported an altercation between a man and a woman.
Department of Public Safety agents arrested Urías on suspicion of domestic violence.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office decided in January not to file serious charges, transferring the case to city authorities to consider lesser charges.
According to a document from the district attorney’s office, Urías was arguing with his wife when he “pushed her against a fence and pulled her hair or shoulders.” But the report indicated: “neither the victim’s injuries nor the defendant’s criminal record justify the presentation of serious charges.”
Urías declared himself a free agent after the World Series. He spent the first eight years of his career with the Dodgers.
The suspension was imposed under Major League Baseball’s policies on domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse, adopted through an agreement with the players’ union. That measure could precede a suspension without pay.
Under the measure applied to Urías, the player can continue earning his pay but cannot play.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the majors reported that their investigation is ongoing, but declined to comment further.
Even if Urías is not found guilty, Major League Baseball could suspend the 27-year-old left-hander if it concludes that he violated its policies.
Urías was also arrested in May 2019, on suspicion of domestic violence. Major League Baseball suspended him for 20 games. No player has been suspended twice under Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy.
