The former leader of Pink Floyd starred in a new controversy for his shows on May 17 and 18 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin. The British singer generated strong repudiation for having used a black uniform during the shows, similar to those used by the Nazi SS, and the image of Anne Frank.
“The elements of my performance that have been called into question are clearly a statement of opposition to fascism, injustice and bigotry in all its forms,” Waters wrote on Facebook. “Attempts to present those elements as something else are disingenuous and politically motivated. The portrayal of a deranged fascist demagogue has been a feature of my shows since Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ in 1980?.
In his message, Waters further wrote: “I have spent my entire life denouncing authoritarianism and oppression wherever I see them. When I was a child, after the war, the name of Anne Frank was often spoken in our house, it became a permanent reminder of what happens with unchecked fascism. My parents fought against the Nazis in World War II, and my father paid the ultimate price. Regardless of the consequences of the attacks against me, I will continue to condemn injustice and all those who perpetrate it.”
The statement released Friday night came shortly after Berlin police said they had opened an investigation into Waters’ behavior at his concerts in Berlin.
