Former Philippine President Fidel Ramos has died. He ruled the Southeast Asian country between 1992 and 1998 and has turned 94 years old.

He was the head of the police for a long time under dictator Marcos. In 1986, for example, he played an important role in the overthrow of Marcos, who had ruled from 1965. Before that, Ramos had held various positions within the military. He had also fought in the Korean War. After the elections in 1986, Marcos refused to relinquish power, after which Ramos, who had supported the dictator for years, sided with his opponent Cory Aquino.

In 1992, Ramos himself narrowly won the presidential election to remain in power for six years. During his presidency, the Philippines experienced a period of relative peace, stability and economic growth. With a policy of deregulation and liberalization, he opened up the economy to foreign investment and succeeded in reducing poverty in the country.

Place in history

“He leaves behind a multifaceted legacy and deserves a place in history for his participation in the great changes of our country, both as military and as president,” said a spokesman for the current president, Ferdinand Marcos Junior. He is known by his nickname ‘Bongbong’ and this year became president of the Philippines chosen.
