urielblanco

(CNN Spanish) – Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo filed an emergency appeal in federal court on Thursday to avoid his arrest and subsequent extradition, according to a court document obtained by CNN.

According to the document presented by his defense before a federal court in the District of Columbia, Toledo requests to temporarily suspend the detention and extradition while a motion for reconsideration that is pending in his case and that he presented this Wednesday is resolved.

The emergency appeal was filed hours after a California federal judge ordered the former president to turn himself in this Friday before federal agents to face his extradition to Peru.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) told CNN on Thursday that it will not comment further on the case and will limit itself to what it has already explained in publicly accessible court documents, according to DOJ spokeswoman Nicole Navas explained in an email.

CNN tries to reach Toledo’s lawyers.

What are they accusing the former president of Peru Alejandro Toledo of? The Ecoteva case

The ex-president has been under house arrest in California since 2019 and is required by the Peruvian Justice for charges of collusion and money laundering. Toledo has denied the accusations and has called them political persecution.

According to the Peruvian authorities, Toledo, who governed the country between 2001 and 2006, would have received up to US$30 million in alleged bribes from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht to favor the company in obtaining contracts in the country.
