Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori was released on Wednesday (local time). Fujimori has been serving a 25-year prison sentence for crimes against humanity since 2009. He is released on medical grounds.
Peru’s constitutional court ruled on Tuesday that Fujimori should be released. The 85-year-old former president is in poor health.
Fujimori ruled Peru from 1990 to 2000, when he was ousted following corruption allegations. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2009 for violating human rights.
During his rule, at least 25 people were murdered as part of ‘anti-terror operations’. Fujimori deployed special death squads for this purpose.
Fujimori, who has a Japanese background, tried to avoid punishment by fleeing to Japan. He was extradited to Peru and convicted. It was the first time that had happened to an elected head of state.
The former president was pardoned by his successor Pedro Pablo Kuczynski at the end of 2017. This was reversed a year later, without Fujimori having been released in the meantime. Last year, the constitutional court ordered his release. An objection to this was rejected last Tuesday.
