Lima. Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, who spent 16 years in prison for crimes against humanity, died Wednesday at the age of 86 at his home in Lima, where he was recovering from cancer treatment, his family said.
“After a long battle with cancer, our father, Alberto Fujimori, has just passed away to meet the Lord. We ask those who loved him to accompany us with a prayer for the eternal rest of his soul. Thank you for so much, Dad!” announced his children Keiko, Hiro, Sachie and Kenji Fujimori on the social network X.
Alberto Fujimori, who ruled Peru from 1990 to 2000, was released in December after spending 16 years in a prison for former presidents in eastern Lima. There he was serving a 25-year sentence for human rights violations during his government.
His ten years in office were marked by several massacres, including those in Barrios Altos and La Cantuta – which earned him a prison sentence – as well as the forced sterilization of thousands of women and men, mostly indigenous.
The court ordered his release on humanitarian grounds.
Fujimori’s health has deteriorated rapidly over the past week, following the conclusion of oral radiotherapy treatment in August, sources close to the family have told AFP in recent hours.
A Catholic priest arrived at the house in the Lima district of San Borja, where he lived with his eldest daughter Keiko Fujimori, in the afternoon.
Fujimori was last seen publicly last Thursday when he was leaving a clinic in the Miraflores district where he had a CT scan, he said.
On July 14, his daughter Keiko, a former presidential candidate, announced that the right-wing leader would run for president in the 2026 elections.
“We’ll see (if I’m a presidential candidate),” the former president said a few days ago from his wheelchair.
Last May, Fujimori announced that a malignant tumor had been detected in his tongue, after suffering from a cancerous lesion in the same organ for more than 27 years.
The news of his death spread like wildfire on social media, where supporters and detractors competed in praise and criticism.
