Former People Power Party lawmaker Yoo Seung-min Urges President Yoon Seok-yeol Not to Veto Itaweon Disaster Special Law

▲ Former People Power Party lawmaker Yoo Seung-min is giving a lecture on the topic ‘What kind of world will we create’ at the Baekyang Hall of Yonsei University in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul in November last year. Yonhap News Agency Former People Power Party lawmaker Yoo Seung-min said of the Itaewon disaster special law, “I urge President Yoon Seok-yeol not to exercise his veto this time.”

In a post written on Facebook on the 18th, former lawmaker Yoo claimed, “If (President Yoon) rejects the Special Prosecutor Kim Kun-hee Act, the 5 Billion Club Special Prosecution Act, and even the Itaewon Disaster Special Act, isn’t he afraid of the judgment of the general election?”

He also criticized the People Power Party, saying, “Today, the People Power Party General Assembly decided to recommend to the President the exercise of the right to veto the Itaewon Disaster Special Act.” He also criticized the People Power Party, saying, “The Itaewon disaster was a tragedy in which the entire people, beyond the camp, shared the pain.” .

He continued, “There is no justification as to why the People Power Party is rejecting the special law to investigate the truth, establish responsibility, and prevent recurrence. “They say the reason for the rejection is the formation of a special investigation committee and the right to access records, but I don’t understand why the party would go so far as to suggest that the president reject this law.”

Previously, the Itaewon Special Act was passed by the opposition party alone at the plenary session of the National Assembly on the 9th. The goal is to form a special committee to uncover the truth about the Itaewon disaster and define measures to provide relief and support to victims.

Yoon Jae-ok, floor leader of the People Power Party, told reporters after the general meeting of lawmakers that day, “We decided to propose exercising the president’s right to request reconsideration (veto).” He argued that “fairness cannot be secured” with the provisions of the opposition party-led special law.

On this day, the families of the victims of the Itaewon disaster held an emergency press conference in front of the Presidential Office in Yongsan, Seoul and shaved their heads, saying, “If a chairman recommended by the ruling party is appointed and the government’s influence influences the investigation process, the truth cannot be properly uncovered.”
