Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and Wife Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison: Latest Updates

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushara Bibi have been sentenced to fourteen years in prison in the Tosha Khana case. The Islamabad court has given the sentence in the new case after the sentence of 10 years imprisonment in the Cipher case yesterday. A fine of 78.7 crore Pakistan rupees has also been imposed.

The third court verdict against Imran Khan has come just a week before the general elections in Pakistan. This is the second time Imran Khan has been convicted in the Tosha Khanna case. On August 5, he was sentenced to three years in prison. Khan is currently lodged in a jail in Rawalpindi. The Islamabad High Court had temporarily stayed Imran’s sentence. However, Imran’s plea seeking quashing of the conviction was later rejected by the division bench. The Tosha Khana case against Imran Khan is that he made illegal money by selling the gifts he received as Prime Minister during his foreign visits.

Pakistan’s former foreign minister Mahmood Qureshi was sentenced to 10 years along with Imran Khan in the Cipher case. According to the Federal Investigation Agency’s indictment, the cipher case relates to a diplomatic document that Imran Khan did not return. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had already argued that the US threat to remove Imran as Prime Minister was on record.

About one hundred and fifty cases are pending against Imran Khan. Imran alleges that so many cases were fabricated to keep him out of the election. Imran Khan’s party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, may be banned, according to Pakistani media reports, as it faces prison terms in riot cases, including its founding leaders. After Imran Khan’s arrest, there were clashes between PTI workers and the police across Pakistan. Many leaders are serving jail terms in this case.
