Former Prime Minister (PM) Pakistan Imran Khan reportedly arrested by paramilitary forces on Tuesday (9/5) local time. Khan’s arrest occurred while he was attending trial at Islamabad’s high court.
As reported Reuters and Al JazeeraTuesday (9/5/2023), local television report GEO TV said Khan was arrested outside a courthouse in Islamabad on Tuesday (9/5) local time in connection with a corruption case. Not explained further about the corruption case that ensnared Khan.
Khan’s aide, Fawad Chaudhry, from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party (PTI), confirmed via Twitter that Khan had been arrested. He also mentioned that the former Pakistan PM’s car was surrounded outside the courthouse Islamabad.
“Imran Khan’s car has been surrounded,” Chaudhry wrote in the statement.
He also said that the Islamabad High Court complex, where the arrests took place, had been occupied by Pakistani Ranger paramilitary forces.
Chaudhry even called the lawyers “subject to torture”, without elaborating.
A video posted by PTI to Twitter shows Khan being escorted by a large number of Pakistani paramilitary personnel into an armored vehicle, which then takes him away from the court complex. It is not clear where Khan was taken.
