Buenos Aires – Liam Payne, singer of the former Irish-British boy band One Direction, was found dead in a hotel in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires on Wednesday. This was reported by local media, according to which the 31-year-old musician died after falling from the third floor of the hotel. According to the AP agency, Argentine police said that the singer’s room was in disarray and there were broken things and medicine scattered on the floor, among other things. There is no indication that anyone else was involved in his death, the prosecutor’s office said.

Local dailies La Nación and Clarín said police were called to the hotel in the affluent Palermo district after 5:00 p.m. local time on Wednesday following an emergency call about an allegedly “aggressive man who may be under the influence of drugs and alcohol.” In a phone call to the emergency line, the hotel manager spoke of a guest who was “ruining the whole room”.
Payne has previously spoken publicly about his mental health issues and his use of alcohol to cope with the pressures of fame.
Police found in his room, among other things, packages of the drug clonazepam, which is also used to treat anxiety, energy supplements and other over-the-counter drugs. A bottle of whiskey, a lighter and a cell phone were also found in the courtyard of the Casa Sur Hotel, where Payne landed.
Pablo Policicchio, a spokesman for the Ministry of Security of the Argentine capital, told the AP that Payne “threw himself from the balcony of his room”. According to the prosecutor’s office, an autopsy showed that the cause of death was bleeding and multiple injuries caused by a fall. A head injury by itself would also cause death. According to the authorities, the singer may have fallen partially or completely unconscious.
Together with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne formed the globally popular group One Direction at the time.
The band’s fame began to spread after its participation in the British version of the music competition X Factor in 2010, but already in 2016 the group broke up and its individual members devoted themselves to various projects and solo careers.
According to Argentine media, Payne was in Buenos Aires to attend a concert by one of his former One Direction bandmates, Niall Horan.
Payne had a seven-year-old son with his ex-girlfriend, musician Cheryl Cole, who was a member of the girl group Girls Aloud.
