Former North Korean Diplomat Discusses Unlikelihood of Armed Rebellion in North Korea

Rep. Tae Young-ho, a former North Korean diplomat, predicted that an armed rebellion by the Wagner Group, a private military company (PMC) that occurred in Russia on the 23rd, would be difficult to occur in North Korea.

On the 27th, Rep. Thae made this assessment on his Facebook page, saying, “Can the North Korean armistice line corps advance to Pyongyang?”

Rep. Thae said, “Last weekend, the Russian mercenary group Wagner Group turned their guns on Putin and reached 200 km from Moscow in one day, but eventually gave up.” So I asked if there was any possibility of advancing on Pyongyang. No one can predict how history will flow in the future, but I think it is impossible given the current structure of the North Korean military.”

Rep. Thae said, “In conclusion, it can be seen that the reason why Prigogine, the head of the Wagner Group, went all the way to the vicinity of Moscow vigorously, but gave up in front of the might of the Russian capital defense forces surrounding Moscow,” said Rep. Thae.

Rep. Thae said, “The structure of the North Korean military can be seen as essentially closer to preventing military coup than to conducting war.” Under the Supreme Commander, Kim Jong-un, there is a general command, which is the equivalent of our joint staff, called the General Staff Department, but the Capital Defense Command (aka Training Center 91), which guards the outskirts of Pyongyang City, and the Escort Command, which has jurisdiction inside Pyongyang, are directly assigned to Kim Jong-un outside the jurisdiction of the General Staff Department. ”he explained.

He continued, “The Armed Forces are better equipped and trained than North Korea’s armistice line units, and the number of personnel exceeds 100,000.” However, in Pyongyang, in addition to the escort command, the National Security Agency, which corresponds to our NIS, and the Security Ministry, which corresponds to our police, exist independently.”

Rep. Tae said, “Even if the armistice line corps break through the capital defense line with tanks and enter the city, from the moment it enters Pyongyang, tens of thousands of elite units such as escort command units, security forces, and security units, as well as military university student units “In addition, there are armed forces in Pyongyang, such as the Labor Red Guards with hundreds of thousands of people who can arm themselves and go into battle immediately if the Party Military Committee orders it, and the prison guards made up of university students,” he added.

Rep. Thae said, “In the end, North Korean military officers who are well aware of this decentralized structure would not even dare to commit a military coup.” It is an unfavorable structure in the event of a war like 25.”

However, he added, “over the years, the overall loyalty of the North Korean military to the Kim family will decline.”

Rep. Tae said, “There will definitely be times when the North Korean people and the military, who are angry at the frustration and boredom of the Kim regime, will come together to solve the North Korean problem on their own,” he said. “Because it is the order of history.”
