Former NFL Head Coach Bill O’Brien Joins Ohio State as Offensive Coordinator
In a surprising move, former NFL head coach Bill O’Brien is set to join Ohio State as the school’s new offensive coordinator, according to sources. This hiring comes as Ohio State head coach Ryan Day looks to bring in an experienced coordinator who can take over playcalling duties, allowing Day to focus on other aspects of the team.
O’Brien brings a wealth of experience to the table, having served as the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots in 2023. He has also worked with top quarterbacks such as Bryce Young at Alabama, Tom Brady, and Deshaun Watson. Under O’Brien’s guidance, Young won the Heisman Trophy in 2021, and Alabama’s offense finished in the top 10 in scoring in both of O’Brien’s seasons as coordinator.
Ohio State’s offense struggled this season, averaging only 30.5 points per game compared to 44.2 the previous year. With O’Brien’s expertise, the Buckeyes hope to regain their offensive prowess and return to their high-scoring ways.
O’Brien’s coaching career extends beyond the NFL. He has also served as a head coach in the Big Ten, taking over at Penn State in 2012 after the departure of Joe Paterno. During his time at Penn State, O’Brien proved to be a strong recruiter and provided stability to the program as it dealt with the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky scandal.
In addition to O’Brien’s hiring, Ohio State has made other significant changes to its coaching staff. Assistant coaches Perry Eliano and Parker Fleming will not be returning next season. These changes come after a disappointing end to the 2023 season, with three consecutive losses to Michigan and a two-game losing streak.
Despite these setbacks, Ohio State has received positive news in terms of player retention and additions. Several draft-eligible players have decided to return for another season, including star wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, tailback TreVeyon Henderson, and guard Donovan Jackson. These players were highly regarded and had the potential to enter the NFL draft.
Furthermore, Ohio State has made notable additions through the transfer portal. Former Kansas State quarterback Will Howard will join the Buckeyes for his final year of eligibility, while two-time All-SEC tailback Quinshon Judkins transferred from Ole Miss. The Buckeyes have also added Alabama center Seth McLaughlin through the portal.
Bill O’Brien’s hiring as offensive coordinator brings a fresh perspective and a wealth of experience to Ohio State. With his track record of success and ability to develop quarterbacks, the Buckeyes are hopeful that O’Brien can revitalize their offense and lead them to future victories. As the team undergoes significant changes, both in coaching staff and player personnel, Ohio State appears poised to make a strong investment in its football program.
