Giuliani, who is also a former mayor of New York, listed current or potential debts of about $153 million in his bankruptcy filing Thursday, including nearly a million dollars in unpaid taxes, debts owed to his attorneys and many millions of dollars in potential judgments against him.
Giuliani estimated that he owns between $1 million and $10 million in assets.
The largest of his debts is $148 million in restitution, which a jury ordered him to pay on Dec. 15 for defaming two Georgia election workers in connection with the 2020 presidential election.
Giuliani’s political adviser and press secretary, Ted Goodman, said the bankruptcy filing “shouldn’t surprise anyone.” “No one could reasonably believe that [bijušais] Mayor Giuliani would be able to pay that much of a fine,” Goodman said.
Filing for bankruptcy will not, however, erase the said 148 million dollars in compensation, because the bankruptcy law does not allow the extinguishment of debts that arose due to “deliberate and malicious harm” caused to others.
