Former New York Mayor Bill de Blasio (2014-2022) and his wife Chirlane McCray have separated after celebrating thirty years together, both announced to The New York Times.
In an interview that De Blasio and McCray – parents of two children over twenty years old – gave to the newspaper, they clarified that it was by mutual agreement and that they are not divorcing at the moment.
The couple passed for being the perfect image of inclusiveness in New York: he white and of Italian descent; She is black and much shorter than him, as well as a confessed lesbian in her youth. Their wedding, in 1994, was officiated by two gay officials under a tree in a Brooklyn park.
The news was provided in an unusual intimate interview with the journalist in the house they still share in one of the most “chic” neighborhoods in Brooklyn, in which they did not stop sending messages of affection and gestures of complicity; however, they made it clear that “what we are saying to the world is that we no longer want to possess each other.”
De Blasio also posted a message on social networks with the image and the link to the NYT note in which he writes: “Even in this moment of change, this is a love story.”

McCray, who is also six years older than her still husband, pointed out that it was probably de Blasio’s demanding political career that affected their marriage the most, and that in fact she was openly opposed to him seeking a second term, but still so he went on.
De Blasio did not seem content with his years as mayor of the largest American city, and when he left the mayor’s office, and again against his wife’s wishes, he ran for the Democratic Party presidential, but had to retire months later before the tiny percentage of support obtained.
For now, they say they are going to pursue their respective professional careers: him teaching at New York University and giving paid lectures in Italy; she will continue in the field of public mental health, an area where she had some responsibilities as “first lady”.
McCray (68 years old) says in the interview that now, without De Blasio by her side, she will be able to enjoy anonymity, adding that “I just want to have a good time”, and before the puzzled look of her still husband, she specified: “It’s not that We didn’t have a good time,” to which he replied, “Thank you, darling.”
