The former leader of one of New York City’s police unions was sentenced to two years in federal prison on Thursday in a fraud case in which prosecutors accused him of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars to the association, local media reported.
United States District Court Judge John Koeltl handed down the sentence against Ed Mullins, who served as president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association (SBA) from 2002 to 2021, during a hearing in a Manhattan courtroom, the New York Daily News reported.
In January, Mullins pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and agreed to forfeit $600,000 to the US government and donate $600,000 to the union.
“While I regret everything that has brought me to this day, I remain motivated to do things right, to right my flaws, and to restore all those I have hurt,” Mullins said during the hearing. Thursday, according to the Daily News.
Between 2017 and his resignation as head of the union in October 2021, Mullins used a personal credit card to dine at expensive restaurants and shop at luxury stores, prosecutors said. Mullins then submitted false and inflated expense reports to the union for reimbursement, prosecutors said.
In total, Mullins stole at least $600,000 from SBA, prosecutors say.
Koeltl also sentenced Mullins to three years of supervision after his release from prison, the Daily News reported.
The ASB, headquartered in lower Manhattan, is the fifth-largest police union in the United States. The union’s 13,000 members are active and retired police officers from the New York Police Department.
