One Former North Carolina police chief who faked his death was arrested Thursday in South Carolina after he failed to appear in court.
A couple who helped him fake his suicide are also facing charges.
The former head of chadbourn police, William Anthony Spiveywho resigned amid a misconduct investigation, was reported missing Monday after failing to return from a fishing trip, the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office said.
A witness, identified as Dean Sasser, said that Spivey asked to borrow his camper, but never returned. Seasser and his wife, Debbie, called police after finding the vehicle on the banks of the Lumber River and Spivey’s boat downriver.
Investigators found handwritten letters and a .22 caliber rifle with an unloaded bullet.
After carrying out the pertinent investigations, the police determined “that the scene in the river was a montage.”
Authorities issued the arrest warrants after Spivey failed to appear in court, according to the sheriff’s office.
How was Spivey captured?
Last Thursday, Spivey was found at his aunt’s apartment in Loris, South Carolina. He was captured after a chase.
At the moment, William Anthony Spivey is in custody and faces $1 million bail.
The Sassers were charged with complicity and helping Spivey fake his suicide. They face charges of obstructing justice, the sheriff’s office said.
