The mastermind behind the case of the players who defrauded the NBA Players Health and Welfare Benefit Plan, Terrence Williams, has received a harsh prison sentence.
“Williams led a far-reaching scheme to steal millions of dollars from the NBA Players Health and Welfare Benefit Plan. Williams recruited medical professionals and others to further his criminal conspiracy and maximize his fraudulent profits. Williams not only lined his pockets with fraud and deceit, but also stole the identities of others and threatened a witness to further his criminal activities. For his brazen criminal acts, Williams now faces years in prison,” US Attorney Damian Williams described.
The former NBA player, who has 158 league appearances playing for the Boston Celtics, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets and New Jersey Nets from 2009 to 2013, was sentenced to ten years in prison. Additionally, he was sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to forfeit $653,672.55 and pay a fine of $2,500,000.
Williams, 36, was one of several former NBA players arrested in 2021 following a federal investigation. In 2022, he pleaded guilty, confessing to having led the fraud of the Plan that protects former and retired NBA players and their families. The bogus activities involving medical and dental services totaled at least $5 million and were connected to bribe payments of at least $300,000 to Williams.
