While the director of an obstetrics and gynecology hospital in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, accused former soccer player Lee Dong-guk and his wife of attempted fraud, the Incheon Police Agency has received the case and is investigating. When news of the legal battle became known, Lee Dong-guk said, “The hospital director decided to withdraw the lawsuit,” but the hospital director reportedly changed his position.

According to Hankyung.com on the 4th, Mr. Kim, the director of Kwak Women’s Hospital in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, submitted additional evidence to the Incheon Police Agency Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Investigation Team regarding Lee Dong-guk and his wife, who recently filed a complaint for attempted fraud. The evidence is said to include statements from those involved that Lee Dong-guk and his wife received sponsorship for medical expenses from the hospital and agreed to publicity in return. Mr. Kim’s side claimed that Lee Dong-guk and his wife received a discount of up to 1.3 million won on hospital medical expenses.

Previously, on the 15th, Mr. Kim filed a complaint against Lee Dong-guk and his wife, who were involved in a portrait rights dispute, on charges of attempted fraud. Mr. Kim took over the hospital in February 2019, and claimed that Lee Dong-guk had other intentions in pressuring him by using the image rights for promotional materials that had not been an issue before. Mr. Kim is engaged in a lease-related dispute with Mr. Kwak, the former obstetrics and gynecology director, and suspects that Lee Dong-guk and his wife, who are close friends of Mr. Kwak’s family, are trying to pressure him for ‘infringement of portrait rights.’

When news of the legal dispute became known belatedly, Lee Dong-guk’s agency, Saesang Entertainment, announced that it would take legal action against Mr. Kim for defamation and false accusation. Afterwards, Lee Dong-guk’s agency issued a statement saying, “Mr. Kim decided to withdraw the lawsuit, saying ‘it stemmed from a misunderstanding,’ and the case was concluded.”

However, contrary to the agency’s announcement, it was reported that Mr. Kim did not withdraw the lawsuit. Mr. Kim told Hankyung.com, “It is true that I was considering withdrawing the lawsuit, but after seeing one-sided media reports, my trust was broken.” “The articles came out,” he said. At the same time, he said, “After receiving legal advice, I decided to proceed with the complaint and submit additional evidence.”

Lee Dong-guk and his wife gave birth to twin daughters, Seol-ah and Su-a, at this hospital in July 2013. In November 2014, her youngest son, Sian, widely known as ‘Daebak’, was also born here. Since then, the obstetrics and gynecology clinic has been using family photos of Lee Dong-guk and his wife for publicity.

Then, in February 2019, Mr. Kim took over the obstetrics and gynecology business from Mr. Kwak. In October last year, Lee Dong-guk and his wife filed a civil mediation application against Mr. Kim, demanding 1.2 billion won in modeling fees. The reason was that they did not consent to their family photos being used to promote the hospital.

Lee Dong-guk and his wife reportedly stated that the infringement on portrait rights began in November 2013. The court decided to dismiss the application for mediation, saying it did not meet the requirements for a lawsuit. Lee Dong-guk and his wife did not apply for mediation again.

Mr. Kim then claimed that it was an “attempted fraud,” saying, “Lee Dong-guk and his wife, who are close friends of Mr. Kwak, filed a lawsuit on behalf of Mr. Kwak to put pressure on him.” The law firm selected to represent Mr. Kim says that it will continue litigation related to Lee Dong-guk and his wife.
