Ahead of next year’s April 10 general elections, the movement to withdraw from the party and create a new party is accelerating among the ruling and opposition parties. Former Vice Speaker of the National Assembly Lee Seok-hyun (6 terms), a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, announced on the 29th that he would withdraw from the Democratic Party and participate in the ‘New Lee Nak-yeon Party’. People Power Party Chairman Chun Haram and Suncheongap Party Council Chairman also withdrew from the party on this day, declaring that he would join the ‘Lee Jun-seok New Party’.
Former Vice Chairman Lee is the youngest member of the Donggyo-dong family, who served as secretary to former President Kim Dae-jung from 1985 to 1988. He served as a member of the 14th, 15th, 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th National Assembly in Dongan-gu, Anyang City, as Vice-Chairman for the second half of the 19th National Assembly, and as Senior Vice-Chairman of the Moon Jae-in administration’s Democratic and Peaceful Unification Advisory Council. At a press conference at the National Assembly, he compared the Democratic Party to the Titanic just before sinking and said, “Even if the captain steers the ship toward disaster, the crew believes in the size of the ship and enjoys the party on board.”
Former Vice Chairman Lee said, “Democracy and justice have disappeared from the Democratic Party due to Representative Lee Jae-myung’s selfishness,” and “We cannot ignore the lonely struggle of former Representative Lee Nak-yeon, a friend of 50 years.” “I will build a new party together with Lee Nak-yeon,” he said. This is the second time the Democratic Party has announced joining a new party, following former Goyang Mayor Choi Seong. Former Vice-Chairman Lee said in a phone call with this newspaper that adviser Kwon Noh-gap, a senior member of the Donggyo-dong faction, encouraged him to “do well” regarding his withdrawal from the party, and that “the support of the people who are tired of the evils of the politics of the two established parties will flock to the new party by February.”
Former leader Nak-yeon Lee is expected to announce his plans, including leaving the party, early next month. There is a possibility that non-members of the party (Lee Won-wook, Cho Eung-cheon, Kim Jong-min, and Yoon Young-chan) will join. Representative Lee Jae-myeong’s strong supporters (dog daughters) poured out criticism on the former vice-chairman Lee’s withdrawal from the party, saying, “I hope that Lee Nak-yeon’s new party will separate the trash.”
Lee Jae-myung and Lee Nak-yeon decided to meet at a restaurant in Seoul on the morning of the 30th. Amid predictions that it might in fact be a ‘breakup meeting’, Representative Lee met with reporters at the National Assembly and said, “I was thinking of going to my house to see you at least once, but I got in touch with you.” “I will,” he said.
On this day, the People Power Party also announced that Jeonnam Suncheongap Party Council Chairman Chun Haram, Gyeonggi Provincial Assemblyman Lee Ki-in, and former spokesperson Lim Seung-ho announced their withdrawal from the party and joined the tentatively named ‘New Reform Party’ led by former leader Lee Jun-seok. It has been two days since former representative Lee announced his withdrawal from the party and the creation of a new party on the 27th. Chairman Cheon and Provincial Assemblyman Lee decided to serve as co-chairs of the Preparatory Committee for the Creation of the New Reform Party.
At a press conference at the National Assembly on this day, Chairman Cheon said, “After deep consideration, we decided that it would be very difficult to fundamentally reform the People Power Party within a short period of time.” He added, “Creating a new political party for the future is not only a great necessity, but also has a high possibility of success.” “We concluded that it was also high,” he said. He said, “If the People Power Party without Lee Jun-seok is successful as a reformist faction, it may be comfortable for a while, but I think it is the way to quietly wither away.” “How many people are left to lead, whether in or out of the National Assembly?”
It is reported that Rep. Heo Eun-ah, a proportional representative, and former party leader Kim Cheol-geun, political affairs chief, are also expected to announce their intention to join the new party sometime next week. Among the ‘Cheonah Yong-in’ who have shared the political line with former representative Lee, all except former Supreme Council member Kim Yong-tae are expected to move to the new party. Chairman Cheon said on this day, “Among the active members of the National Assembly, other than Representative Heo Eun-ah, there are others who have expressed their intention to join, and we will make this public gradually.”
There was a lot of speculation about which incumbent lawmakers would join the new party, but no public comments were made. One pro-Yoon-gye lawmaker said, “A few lawmakers who cannot be nominated may join, but it will not be enough to disrupt the general trend.”
