Former Minnesota cop convicted of shooting black suspect

According to CNN, Potter is expected to face 6 to 8.5 years in prison. The judge will rule on this on February 18. The relatives of Wright and protestors were present at the court, as well as people who came to support Potter.

Wright’s death sparked violent protests in the Brooklyn Center suburb in April. The shooting incident happened while Minneapolis was already unsettled. Former officer Derek Chauvin was on trial at the time for killing George Floyd. That issue, and the deaths of other black Americans at the hands of mostly white cops, sparked Black Lives Matter protests in the United States and beyond last year.

In June Chauvin was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison. Potter’s conviction is now the second in a year for the killing of a black American by a cop.
