Former mayor Gerd Leers files a report after headbutt

Former minister and mayor Gerd Leers has filed a complaint after he was headbutted by someone who claimed that Leers still owes him thousands of euros.

The incident took place last week in the parking lot of a hardware store in Maastricht. The 70-year-old former mayor of Maastricht was left with a black eye, he tells L1.

Compensation

The man who handed out the headbutt is an acquaintance of Leers. It would be a hardware dealer who had approached Leers to help clear out old factories in Maastricht. Pottery used to be made in those factories. As the foreman of a foundation for the ceramic heritage of Maastricht, Leers took care of the factories.

According to Leers, the contact initially went well. “He would help me clean up the mess and in return he could sell the iron,” says Leers. “But suddenly he came up with a bill of almost 14,000 euros, while we had never agreed that. Of course we did not want to pay that. We never received a reminder.”

Leers heard nothing from the man for a year. Until last week. “Suddenly he saw me at the hardware store and wanted to settle the bill with me. Then he headbutted me,” says Leers. The police say to the Limburger that the suspect has been interrogated and is no longer in custody.
