Former Manchester United player Roy Keane criticized midfielder Bruno Fernandes following the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in a top-flight match in the English Premier League on Sunday and demanded that the captaincy be stripped from him.
Kane told Sky Sports: “After I saw him today, I will strip Fernandes of the captaincy.” He is not a leader. He whines and moans. I’ll start with that because the coach can control that. “It’s the opposite of what I want in a leader.”
Kane, the former United captain, echoed what his former teammate Gary Neville raised regarding Fernandes after the team’s crushing 7-0 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield last season, their biggest loss since 1931.
Fernandez’s frustration increased during that match in March, as he waved his arms violently, pointed at coach Erik ten Hag and asked to be replaced.
Neville, also a former United captain, said that night: “I think some of his behavior in the second half was a disgrace. United did not embody more than Bruno Fernandes, who was in an embarrassing position in this match.”
Fernandes took over the reins last summer after Harry Maguire was stripped of the role.
Kane commented on this, saying, “After I watched him again, I will 100 percent take the captaincy away from him. I know it is a big decision. It is clear that they took the captaincy away from Maguire, but Fernandes is not a leader,” Reuters reported.
