Former Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohamad Comments on War in Ukraine and US Involvement

Kuala Lumpur

Former Prime Minister (PM) Malaysia Mahathir Mohamad made comments about the war that took place in Ukrainefollow Russian invasion a year ago. Mahathir assessed United States of America (USA) led humanity to a world war by contributing to the emergence of two hostile blocs.

As reported by Russian news agencies, TASSMonday (8/5/2023), Mahathir’s comments were conveyed in an interview with English-language Chinese media, Global Times. The interview discussed issues ranging from China-US relations to the issue of war between Russia and Ukraine continues.

When asked by Global Times Regarding the probability that the war in Ukraine will develop into a world war, Mahathir said that the war has affected the entire world at this point. The rising cost of living and the difficulty in supplying grain from Ukraine have affected many other countries.

“The US will try to get other countries to join in the action against Russia, and Russia will also look for friendly countries that will support it,” Mahathir (97) said in the interview.

“There will be a confrontation between the Eastern and Western blocs. And this will trigger an escalation and become a world war,” he said.

In the interview, Mahathir further assessed that the invitation for Ukraine to join the US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) military alliance was tantamount to a provocation for Russia.

“The invitation for Ukraine to join NATO is a provocation,” he said.

“In fact, if Ukraine had not joined NATO, I think Russia would have felt less threatened, and there would have been no confrontation. But once the process starts, Russia will take precautions,” Mahathir said.
