(CNN)– Former Liverpool club captain Jordan Henderson announced on Thursday his departure from the Saudi club Al-Ittifaq, only 6 months after joining it..
Henderson said, via the “X” platform (formerly Twitter): “I regret to say that I will leave the agreement with immediate effect. It was not an easy decision, but I feel that it is the best for me and my family,” while a team statement described the decision to terminate the player’s contract as “amicable.”
Club president Samer Al-Meshal said: “The club and Jordan Henderson believe that this quick decision was taken without any delay for the greater good of the club and Henderson.”
Last July, the 33-year-old left England in a transfer deal worth an estimated $15 million (£12 million) from Liverpool to Al-Ettifaq.
According to ESPN, Henderson’s contract with the Saudi club was for 3 years.
At Liverpool, Henderson served as team captain and won a number of awards, most notably the English Premier League and the Champions League.
According to the Transfermarkt sports website, Henderson participated in only 17 matches with Al-Ettifaq.
Saad Al-Ladhiz, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Saudi Professional League, said: “This is all just part of football, all over the world and life, in all professions. Sometimes, despite their best efforts, people are not always able to adapt or Stability, which may affect performance and lead to frustration for everyone.” He added: “Jordan Henderson is a good man and it is unfortunate that things did not go well with him, but he will be the first to admit that full support and respect have been given to him.”
On the same day that Henderson’s departure was announced, Dutch club Ajax announced that it had reached an agreement with the player.
Ajax coach John van’t Schip said on Thursday about the player’s joining the team that he is “a great reinforcement to our team, both on and off the field. A football player of this caliber is important to many of our young players.”
