Former Leeds captain Sol Bamba dies

The former defender and Ivorian international Sun Bambawho resumed his career after battling cancer in 2021, died aged 39, his former clubs announced on Saturday night. “The Leeds United “is devastated to learn of the death of its former captain Sol Bamba at the age of 39,” the English Championship club said in a statement.

“It is with great sadness that we have learned this afternoon of the passing away of club legend Sol Bamba,” writes the Welsh club. Cardiff on the social network X. Bamba trained and made his debut in France, at Paris Saint-Germain, and later played in Scotland, Leicester (England), Trabzonspor (Turkey) and Palermo (Italy).

He made his name at Leeds, where he became club captain, and at Cardiff, where he played over a hundred games and participated in the team’s return to the Premier League for the 2018-2019 season.

Sol Bamba announced that he had been diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in early 2021 while playing for Cardiff. He returned to play after several months, following his chemotherapy, at the Welsh club and then at Middlesbrough, another English club in the Championship. He worked with the technical team of Adanaspor, of the Turkish second division, before his death.
