(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Hwang Yoon-ki = Former member of the National Assembly Geum Tae-seop (57, 24th class of the Judicial Research and Training Institute), who served as the top member of the New Reform Party, is expected to run for the presidential election of the Korean Bar Association (Bar Association) to be held in January next year.

According to the legal community on the 28th, Representative Geum Jeon has recently made up his mind to run for the 53rd president of the association through the persuasion of lawyers around him.

The Bar Association is a statutory body that members must join in order to practice as a lawyer, and the term of office for the president is three years.

The chairman of the Bar Association is an ex officio member of the recommendation committee for candidates for the Supreme Court Justice, the Prosecutor General, and the Director of the High-ranking Public Officials Crime Investigation Office, and sometimes has the right to recommend special prosecutors.

Rep. Geum Jeon said in a phone call with Yonhap News, “I am actively considering running for office and will be able to tell you soon.”

He emphasized that the Bar Association needs to play its role, saying, “In recent years, the status of the legal profession has fallen to the ground and the public’s trust has been lost, but the Bar Association has not been able to raise its voice.”

He added, “Incumbent judges and prosecutors are not ashamed to run for elections or go to the president’s office right after making a political decision,” adding, “(People around me) always told me that I must fulfill my responsibilities as a lawyer.”

Regarding the legal tech-related disputes such as RoTalk, which have been the main issues of the Korean Bar Association for several years, he said, “The conflict between the two sides has reached its peak due to unilateral disciplinary action,” and added, “A space where diverse opinions can be freely discussed must be created.”

Regarding the conflict between lawyers and other professional organizations, he said, “If lawyers and bar associations are not respected and respected by the public, it is difficult to promote rights and interests,” and “It is important to first fulfill our responsibilities and become a respected bar association.”

Rep. Geum Jeon graduated from Yeouido High School and Seoul National University’s Public Law Department and began his public career as a prosecutor at the Eastern Branch of the Seoul District Prosecutors’ Office in 1995.

He opened his practice as a lawyer in 2007, joined the New Politics Alliance for Democracy (now the Democratic Party of Korea) and served as a member of the National Assembly in his 20s, but left the party after conflict with the leadership over the so-called ‘Cho Kuk Incident’ and the establishment of the High-ranking Public Officials Crime Investigation Office.

Ahead of the 22nd general election, he joined the New Reform Party and served as its top member. He ran as a local member of the National Assembly in Jongno-gu, Seoul, but was defeated.

In addition to Representative Geum Jeon, it is known that Kim Jeong-wook (45, passed the bar exam twice), President of the Seoul Bar Association, and Ahn Byeong-hee (62, military judge 7 times) and lawyer at Hanjung Law Firm are considering running in the 53rd Korean Bar Association Presidential election.
