Former KPK Chairman Alleges Political Interference in Corruption Case

Jakarta

Former Corruption Eradication Committee Chairman Agus Rahardjo told me that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) once asked the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to stop investigating the e-KTP corruption case that involved the Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Setya Novanto. Presidential candidate number 3 Ganjar Pranowo believes that corruption must be eradicated.

“Yes, I don’t know what kind of intervention it is, but corruption must be eradicated,” said Ganjar in La Cove, Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Friday (1/12/2023).

Ganjar then said there were two ways to prevent corruption. He explained two ways, namely improving the system and regulations.

“There are two ways, one is how we prevent, prevent using system improvements, then institutional, clear regulations and finally the factors must be right,” he said.

Not only that, said Ganjar, the actors who carry out the regulations must also be correct. He said eradicating corruption was not enough to just talk about, but had to be taken seriously.

“If the actor is not right, he will usually be involved, and this needs to be supervised by the top leader,” he said.

“So the anti-corruption commitment is not enough just to say it in the mouth, we have to take it seriously and guard it from the community as well,” he added.

Palace Denies Agus Rahardjo

Agus Rahardjo revealed the story about Jokowi asking the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to stop the e-KTP corruption case that dragged the name of former DPR Speaker Setya Novanto. Agus said that this moment was one of the driving forces for the revision of the Corruption Eradication Commission Law. The Palace emphasized that the revision of the Corruption Eradication Committee Law was not the government’s initiative, but rather the DPR’s initiative.

Agus’ story about the meeting with Jokowi was conveyed in an interview with the Rosi program on Kompas TV as quoted, Friday (1/12). Agus said that at that time Jokowi was summoned alone to the Palace.

“I’ll be honest, when the e-KTP case happened, I was summoned alone, by the President. The President at that time was accompanied by Mr. Pratikno. I was surprised that he usually summoned five of them, how come he was alone. And he was not summoned through the press room, but through a small mosque, like that, said Agus.

As soon as he entered, Agus said Jokowi was already angry. According to Agus, Jokowi asked the KPK to stop Setya Novanto’s e-KTP case.

“There, as soon as I entered, the President was already angry. He wanted… because just when I entered, he was already shouting ‘Stop’. I was surprised, stop it, what was it that was stopped,” said Agus.

“After I sat down, it turned out that I only found out that the person who told me to stop it was Mr. Setnov, Chairman of the DPR at that time, who had an e-KTP case so that it would not continue,” he added.
