He was the first French jihadist sentenced on his return from Syria for joining the ranks of radical Islamists. Almost three years after his release from Condé-sur-Sarthe, Flavien Moreau appeared before French justice on Monday, this time for fraud. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison by the Nantes criminal court.
Flavien Moreau, 36, was tried for having paid for numerous purchases through bad checks, as they were linked to current accounts that had just been extinguished, for a total expense of 140,000 euros. A hundred traders were victims of his maneuvers, which began in 2020, shortly after his release, and lasted about three years. Reported by a jeweler, he was finally arrested on July 1 in Nancy. He had since been imprisoned in the Nancy Remand Center.
Heavy criminal past
Flavien Moreau was sentenced in November 2014 to seven years in prison for his departure for Syria. Originally from Nantes, he has since lived partly in the Loire-Atlantique. After turning to delinquency (13 convictions), this South Korean of origin, adopted at a very young age by a French family, had converted to Islam in contact with his friends, before becoming radicalized and then leaving for Syria, where to wage jihad.
Returning to France after a few months, he was identified by the counter-terrorism services and arrested in January 2013 when he intended to return to Syria. He claimed he didn’t take part in any fights.
